Christopher Anderson was born in Canada in 1970 and grew up in west Texas, USA. In 2000, on assignment for the New York Times Magazine, he boarded a small wooden boat with 44 Haitians trying to sail to America. The boat sank in the Caribbean. The photographs earned Christopher the Robert Capa Gold Medal and marked the beginning of a 10 period as a contract photographer for Newsweek Magazine and National Geographic Magazine. In 2011 he became New York Magazine’s first ever Photographer in Residence.
Christopher joined Magnum Photos in 2005, he is the author of four monographs and is currently based in Barcelona, Spain.

“I began making pictures at a moment when we literally thought we were not going to live much longer. And I thought for a long time about this afterwards. Like, what was the point of that? You know. Why would I do that? And the only answer I could come up with for myself had something to do with this idea that the pictures had as much to do with me explaining the world to myself as it did explaining the world to someone else, in a journalistic sense. And that event crystallised the idea of what I wanted pictures to be about, what I wanted my pictures to do. Which is this idea of communicating something about an experience. Communicating something about an emotion…”
